2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2 V10 TDI SUV Shown
Although the Touareg 2 isn't much of a sequel, the original Touareg upon which it's based was a pretty solid sport-utility vehicle. Engineered to blend on-road comfort with genuine off-road capability, this Volkswagen follows an SUV formula more in line with the Range Rover than the growing number of soft-roader crossovers. This is a vehicle that can go practically anywhere while providing good handling and a well-sorted ride, all made possible by a rock-solid platform co-developed with Porsche. Unfortunately, the Touareg 2's few changes from Touareg 1 did not include a lower price. As such, this Volkswagen remains costlier than its humble "people's car" badge would suggest, while offering less space, fewer features and generally weaker performance than many rivals. Current Volkswagen Touareg 2 The Volkswagen Touareg 2 was introduced for 2008 as midlife replacement for the previous Touareg. The same engine selection carried over, with a six-speed automatic and four-wheel drive standard on all models. The base engine is a 3.6-liter V6 with 280 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, while an optional 4.2-liter V8 produces 350 hp and 324 lb-ft of torque. The most intriguing (and expensive) entry is the 5.0-liter turbodiesel V10 available in non-California emissions states that produces 310 hp and a colossal 553 lb-ft of torque. Even with the diesel engine, fuel economy is relatively poor for this class of vehicle. Three engine-specific trim levels are available: VR6, V8 and V10 TDI. Standard equipment on the base VR6 trim includes a power liftgate, auto wipers, a sunroof, rear parking sensors, heated power front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control and satellite radio. The V8 includes an adjustable air suspension, xenon headlights, real wood trim, leather upholstery and driver memory function. Most of these are available on the VR6 trim. The V10 TDI adds a few additional electronic luxury features. In our reviews, we've found the Volkswagen Touareg 2 and its similar predecessor to be well-designed SUVs that offer commendable driving dynamics and a feeling of indestructibility, thanks to their solid German construction (and hefty curb weight). Unlike the original Touareg, the current model's range of engines provides ample power for that hefty curb weight, but the Touareg 2's subpar fuel economy across the board is difficult to ignore. So is its mediocre backseat and cargo space. Given these shortcomings, it's hard to give the VW Touareg 2 a hearty endorsement with so many other capable luxury midsize crossovers currently on the market. Past Volkswagen Touareg 2 The Volkswagen Touareg 2 was introduced in '08. However, it was preceded by the very similar Touareg. This model debuted in the 2004 model year.
